Already own a kayak or thinking of buying a kayak and would like to paddle in safety with some basic skills? Then this introductory kayaking class is for you. This 4-hour course is oriented to beginners with minimal or no prior experience. Topics will include safety & rescues, equipment, and basic maneuvers. Students will learn how to exit their kayak in the event of a capsize. Several techniques for rescuing someone who has come out of their kayak will be demonstrated. Paddling technique for moving a kayak in a straight line, turning a kayak, and moving a kayak sideways will be taught. Minimum of 3, maximum of 10 students per class. |

This course is oriented to beginners who in the warm friendly confines of the Brighton High School pool will learn the forward, reverse, and sweep strokes, recovery strokes, and self and assisted rescues. Interspersed though out the instructional time there will be emphasis on becoming comfortable in the kayak (becoming one with the kayak) through games and kayak play. Specific dates and times of sessions offered are available through the Brighton Community Education Department. All kayaking gear is provided. Minimum of 3, maximum of 10 students per class. |

Kayak rolling is the ultimate self-rescue technique. Learn to roll up from a capsize without coming out of the kayak. Class will start with perfecting bracing techniques designed to prevent a capsize and as a component of the kayak roll. Students will then work one-on-one with instructors to learn a basic sweep or C-to-C roll. Students can also work on fine tuning an existing roll, learn to roll up on both sides, or progress to another type of roll. Both modern and traditional (Greenland) styles can be taught. All kayaking gear is provided or bring your own gear. Minimum of 4, maximum of 10 students per class. |

Knowing how to get yourself and your paddling companions back into the kayak after a capsize and wet exit is an absolutely essential kayaking skill if you ever expect to paddle more than 100 yards from shore. This class will teach both self-rescue and assisted rescue techniques for a variety of situations. Paddle float self-rescue variations, bow, scoop, “Hand-of-God”, and paddle-assist rescues will be covered. All kayaking gear is provided or you can bring your own gear. Minimum of 4, maximum of 10 students per class. |
